The Liberation Health model for supporting populations experiencing trauma helps individuals, families, and communities understand the personal, cultural, and institutional factors that contribute to their problems and act to change these conditions - to liberate themselves from both internal and external oppression. Drawing on similar theory and practices as Liberation Theology, Liberation Health offers a model of care rich in potential for congregations and faith-based organizations seeking to respond to trauma in ways that support and empower healing.
Dawn Belkin Martinez, Ph.D., LICSW, is a Clinical Associate Professor at the Boston University School of Social Work. Trained as a family therapist, Dawn worked as the senior social worker on the Inpatient Psychiatry Service at Children’s Hospital Boston for 13 years and is the co-author of the book Social Justice in Clinical Practice: A Liberation Health Framework for Social Work. Dawn is one of the founding members of the Boston Liberation Health Group and gives presentations locally, nationally, and internationally about liberation health theory and practice.
This is an in-person event. A recording of the seminar will be available following the event at TraumaResponsiveCongregations.org.
